COOKING SOUPS FOR THE HEALTH CONSCIOUS
We investigate some of the techniques necessary to make a healthy soup. We delve into the contents of stock cubes, the amount of salt used in soup stocks and the cooking process. Click here for more information on cooking healthy soups.

SOUP FACT 1
Considerable research has been conducted into soups and their ability to fill you up. If you eat the ingredients of your average soup without the water and then drink the water you will feel less "full up" compared to drinking the soup with the liquid combined in it.

The reason is simple. When your stomach processes liquid alone, it passes through the stomach very quickly because it requires little digestion. But when liquid and other ingredients are combined, as they are in a soup, the whole soup stays in the stomach much longer for digestion, leaving you feeling more full up.

So, if you are on a diet then soup is an ideal food. It provides all the nutrients of the raw ingredients plus it will fill you up quicker and you will feel full up for longer.

SOUP FACT 2
In Thailand they use fish sauce instead of salt for many of their soup recipes. If you are looking to reduce salt intake then why not give it a go with one of our soup recipes above. Add the fish sauce a bit at a time, tasting the soup as you go.

SOUP FACT 3
The world's largest bowl of soup was cooked by the Dutch in 2009 and it still stands as the record in 2012. The inhabitants of Poeldijk created 26,658 litres of vegetable soup to scoop the record. Click here for more information about this record.

SOUP FACT 4
It's difficult to judge what is the most expensive bowl of soup because attempts have been made to achieve this record by adding spurious ingredients such as gold to increase the value.

Possibly the most expensive natural soup is bird's nest soup. In China they eat the nests of cave swifts which the birds form from their saliva. The most prized is the red bird's nest soup which would cost you about $120 in a restaurant. See this page for lots more details on how expensive soup really can be!
