On top of the expense of salt cod is the long preparation time. Allow at least a day to wash out all the salt flavour from the cod. The final problem with a dish of salt cod balls or croquettes is the sheer difficulty in getting the mixture of the correct consistency, and that is crucial if you want it to retain some shape. We tried one recipe and failed abysmally and the cost of trying again put us off the idea. This is our honest opinion.
