Red Peppers Recipe |
All the recipes in our low fat, low salt collection have four key
attributes. They are:
They Taste Great
There's no point in dreaming up really low fat and salt and recipes if
they don't taste great. All our recipes have been handpicked, cooked at
the very least twice and approved by almost all those who had a taste.
They Are Low in Fat
This is the complex one and this little section is a summary of our main
'fat' article which can be found by clicking here.
Our recipes aim to be low in ingredients which contain saturated fat
(animal fat) and trans fatty acids (good vegetable fat which has been
adulterated into bad fat by hydrogenating it). We make no effort to
increase the quantities of unsaturated fats (e.g. olive oil, fish oils)
which are thought to be good against the cholesterol fight.
They Are Low in Salt
Salt is thought to increase blood pressure and this increases the risk of
heart disease. Our recipes aim to be low in salt.
They Are Easy to Prepare
All our recipes, low or not, must be easy to prepare.
If you use our low fat, low salt recipes then be aware that we use a
few low fat, low salt alternatives for some of our ingredients. Currently
these are:
Low Fat Cheese
 |
Low fat cheese is now available in all the supermarkets. We
bought the cheese on the left from one of the major supermarket
chains and it's available in most of them.
There are brands of low fat cheese available with virtually no
fat in them but we have found these to be tasteless. Half the
normal amount of fat seems to be a good compromise. It has most of
the taste of real cheese but a significant reduction in the amount
of saturated fat. |
Olive Oil
| A big picture on the right because this is a big subject in
cooking! This is our opinion, reached only after reading lots of
articles on the subject. If you cook you need some form of oil -
to sauté potatoes, onions, vegetables, seal off chicken and other
meats. Oil is indispensable in cooking.
We firmly believe that the best oil for cooking is standard extra virgin
olive oil. It's absolutely 100% unadulterated pure vegetable oil
full of unsaturated fat which is good for lowering cholesterol.
Also olive oil is a key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet which
is reported as being good for your heart.
However, we have investigated what other oil products are on the
market in the UK and have found a good alternative. It's a spray
(much like a deodorant!) which uses extra virgin olive oil as the
base ingredient. The beauty of this product is that you are
guaranteed that each spray contains only one calorie. You simply
spray onto the food you want oiled and then cook it. So if you have
reservations about extra virgin olive oil (and we don't) then try
this product. The amount of olive oil it uses is minimal. The
disadvantage is cost. This must rate as the most expensive form of
olive oil. |
