Halloween pastry monster

This recipe will keep your kids occupied for an hour or so and it's easy enough for a six year old to do most of the work. Use your imagination for the decorations.

INGREDIENTS
The basic ingredients are shown in the recipe picture below.

Halloween pastry monster for children to cook

Metric Imperial
100 g icing sugar 4 oz icing sugar
100 g soft butter 4 oz soft butter
300 g Self Raising flour 10oz Self Raising flour
1 medium egg (at room temperature) 1 medium egg (at room temperature)
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
10 whole blanched almonds 10 whole blanched almonds
Red food colouring Red food colouring
Black food colouring Black food colouring
1 heaped teaspoon baking powder 1 heaped teaspoon baking powder

WHAT SPECIAL KITCHEN EQUIPMENT
Medium bowl to mix ingredients

Turn the oven on, setting it to 170 C / 325 F / Gas Mark 3.

Mix the icing sugar, butter and egg together with a blunt knife or fork. Mix till most of the ingredients are blended.

Add the flour and mix again for four or five minutes till blended.


 
Halloween pastry mixing Add two tablespoons of water and mix in with your hands, blending it in then rolling it into a ball. The pastry should be moist but only enough to be able to roll it all into a ball.

Add a tablespoon or so of water if it is still crumbly.

Roll out ten fingers of pastry which are a bit thicker in the middle (the knuckle). Form a nose and two largish eyes. Make ten or so small teeth portions. Roll out the central face (lots of flour on the surface to roll easily)

Click the picture to enlarge it to see what we mean. Put them on greaseproof paper in a tray and cook in the oven for 25 minutes at 170 C / 325 F / Gas Mark 3.. Don't open the door until 20 minutes has gone by!


  
Halloween bulging eye moster for children and kids. Stick the almonds in the ends of the fingers to form yellowing finger nails - yukky! The decoration is up to you! We used black food dye to colour the teeth and red food dye on the eyes and fingers.

Use anything you have, allsorts sweets are good.
